The Australian Sports Commission has recently published a new survey showing that over a million people are playing football throughout Australia. Football has grown significantly in the last few years and now has officially become the most popular club-based participation sport for adults and children.
Football Federation Australia chief executive – David Gallop commented,  “It’s official, we are the number one – The growth of the A-League and W-League was providing pathways for more Australian juniors to pursue a professional career while giving the fans a high quality league of their own”.

Inclusiveness, accessibility, growing global interest, the development and success of the A-League were all being contributing factors to the results of the ASC AusPlay survey. “The combination of local accessibility and global interest is attracting more and more Australians” said Mr. Gallop.
Gallop also pointed to the foundation provided by women’s football in the emergence of women’s sporting competitions throughout the world and in particular, throughout Australia in recent times.
“The Beautiful Game”, is one of the most accessible sports in the world and there is hardly anyone in the world who has not kicked a ball at some point in their life. With over 4 billion followers, football’s dominance across the globe is so obvious when you think about it, that it shouldn’t really surprise anyone to see football’s name at the top of that survey.

The study found football accounted for 1.086.986 children and adults club participation, ahead of golf (685.732), AFL (635.627), netball (625.721) and tennis (585.751). Among the other key findings of the report was that people were focused on the health benefits of sport and physical activity, and were not only on the social aspects.
